The Asian Jumbos
Do you know which is the national heritage animal of India?The answer is Elephant. Yes!It is the finest example of a species that is tough to look at but with the kindest hearts. The jumbos are the social animals that cry, play, love& live together as a family for a lifetime. Elephants are the largest land animal in the world.
The Indian elephants is one of the three subspecies or races of the Asian elephants. The Indian elephants is larger, has longer front legs and a thinner body than the Asian elephants in Thailand.
Airy Ears and Trunk Call
- The ears of elephants radiate heat to keep them cool.
- An elephant's trunk, a union of the nose & upper lip, is a highly sensitive organ with over 1,00,000 muscle units.While most of the animals use their nose to just breathe, the elephant uses it to trumpet, grab things, smell,spray water and of course breathe too.
- Asian elephants have a finger like feature at the end of their trunk that they use to grab objects. Their African cousins have two of these fingers.
- Elephants wave their trunks in the air & from side to side smell better.
- The elephant's trunk is able to sense the size , shape & temperature of an object.
- Sometimes the elephant's trunk becomes so heavy they need to rest it over their tusk.
Food for Thought
- Elephants look mighty and can crush a lot of animals under their feet, but unless provoked they are mild animals and totally herbivorous in nature.
- An adult elephant can consume 138 kgs of food each day.
- They love to eat roots, steps, fruits, sugarcane of all kinds
Jumbo Family
- While females tends and look after the young, males roam around alone.
- Average life span is about 60 to 70 years.
- Asian elephants are more closely related to the extinct mammoth than the African elephants.
The Elephants are exceptionally smart creatures and they have the largest brain of any land animal, and three times as many neurons as humans. Elephants can swim too...they use their trunk to breathe like a snorkel in deep water. If a baby elephants complains, the entire family will rumble and go over to touch & caress it.
In reality....an elephant never forgets...they have incredible memories.
